When Willie Morris receives a Jack Russell Terrier for his tenth birthday, he and his canine companion (Skip) turn bullies into friends, tangle with hapless moonshiners and win the affections of the prettiest girl in school.

Full of coming-of-age themes with plenty for kids to talk about: love, loss, creativity, and growing up. Good representation of the forties. Brings up civil rights issues.

Kids were attentive to the issues presented. "It showed how a boy could love a dog so much." The ending is very sad, most felt that the dog didn't need to die. "Friendship is important even between people and their pets."
